Anxiety can be a normal part of life if it occurs appropriately to a triggering situation and responds to the body’s normal coping mechanisms. It is an unpleasant feeling, but in certain situations is simply our body’s way of alerting us that a change is required to take us back to status quo. Fear is also common, and can produce the same symptomatic picture as anxiety. However, the cause of fear is usually obvious and possibly justified, where for anxiety it is not.

Anxiety disorders are often much more harmful and disruptive to the day to day activities, and can be difficult to control. The body’s normal coping mechanisms fail, causing discomfort, distress and possibly other major problems. Phobias and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can result from this abnormal response.

Symptoms include:

  • Feeling nervous, tense, or continuously restless

  • Feeling of being trapped in a situation

  • Irritability

  • Having feelings of impending doom, danger, apprehension or panic

  • Increased heart rate and palpitations,

  • Sweating

  • Rapid breathing

  • Constant tiredness

  • Shaking

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Frequent Urination

  • Trouble sleeping

  • Avoiding situations/things that trigger anxieties

  • Cold and clammy extremities

  • Gastrointestinal difficulties/IBS or changes in bowel habits

  • *Panic attacks, which can last from minutes to hours

Those suffering from Anxiety sometimes also struggle with Depression, and drug or alcohol abuse can be taken up as a form of self-medication.

*Panic Attacks:

Panic attacks are often dramatic, scary, and the symptoms are often perceived by those who experience them to be medical emergencies. As mentioned, they can last from minutes to hours and are self limiting. They can occur without any obvious triggers and patients can experience them either several times a day (at it’s worst) or less.

Symptoms include

  • palpitations

  • Pounding in the chest

  • Chest pains

  • Trembling

  • Choking

  • Abdominal pain

  • Sweating

  • Dizziness

  • Disorganization

  • Fear and an impending sense of doom and terror.

Similar to anxiety and depression, it runs in families and occurs more frequently in women.
